The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented the multiple procedure payment reduction (MPPR) policy to outpatient therapy services in 2011. The MPPR reduces payment to providers of therapy services that bill 2 or more units on the same date of service to a Medicare beneficiary. This reduction also occurs when a Medicare beneficiary is receiving physical therapy and occupational on the same day, occupational therapy and speech therapy on the same day, physical therapy and speech therapy on the same day or all 3 disciplines on the same date of service.
The therapy cap, therapy cap exception process and claims exceeding $3700 in a calendar year continue to be issues for providers of outpatient therapy services. How does the annual Part B deductible impact the therapy cap? How does the MPPR impact the therapy cap? In addition, how are claims that exceed $3700 in a calendar year being paid and/or chosen for an audit?
This 1-hour webinar program will explain the MPPR and its implication on payment for your services and your bottom line profit margin. Case scenario’s will be used to show participants how you are paid a lower rate once you bill more than 1 unit of any modality or intervention on the same day. Case scenario’s will also teach participants how their payment is reduced when a Medicare beneficiary is seen by 2 or all 3 disciplines on the same date of service. Lastly, the webinar will teach the participants the current status of the therapy cap and therapy cap exception process, therapy cap exception process for 2018 and what is occurring with claims that exceed $3700 in a calendar year.

Rick Gawenda, P.T., graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
